Chief of the Division of General Surgery
Specialist in pancreatic and hepatobiliary surgery
Associate Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School
Q: What is your primary role at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center?
A: Since being recruited to BIDMC in 2001, I have served as the chief of the Division of General Surgery. My average week is a hectic but fulfilling mix of patient care, administrative roles, education of medical students and residents, and clinical research. I am a specialist in all forms of advanced pancreatic surgery, which comprises at least 85 percent of my practice. I look after patients from throughout New England, several from out of state and even overseas. I operate usually three days a week and see patients most of the day on Mondays.

The way Herb Gross sees it, Mark Callery, M.D., chief of General Surgery at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, gave him a little extra time to make an indelible impact on the world. After retiring from 50 years of teaching mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Bunker Hill Community College, at 80 years old he developed a series of free online lectures geared towards understanding basic math concepts. The lectures are gaining popularity with teachers and educating students around the world. They also spurred someone at MIT to unearth Herb’s teaching videos from 1970 and post online as open courseware. He is adamant that none of the information would be available if it weren’t for the life-saving surgery performed by Callery.
“I felt he was thoroughly confident. I don’t think you can be a good surgeon if you don’t have strong self-confidence. He told me it was going to be a rough operation, but I was going to be alright.”
