Q & A with... Dr. Mark Gebhardt

Q. What is your role at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center?

A. I am the chief of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at BIDMC. I had the opportunity to basically re-start the department from scratch, hiring a young, vibrant staff and watching them grow and thrive. We started with two staff members and now we have 15 surgeons, two non-operative physicians, and nine residents, who raised the surgical volume from two percent to nearly 25 percent of the total operating room volume. The first department holiday party consisted of barely two tables and now there are hundreds of people involved with orthopaedics at BIDMC.

A Grateful Patient Story

Andrew Clemmer is a grateful patient of Dr. Mark Gebhardt

Andrew Clemmer

Bone cancer was not the first thought 29-year-old Andrew Clemmer considered when he went to the doctor for a persistent pain in his knee. It probably wasn’t the second thought, either.

It was August 2007 when an X-ray taken at a hospital near his home in Delaware showed an obvious growth in his knee. "I was sort of startled," he recalls. "It was one of those things that when you first find out, it’s sort of unreal. I thought I had a tear in my knee."

"He attacked the problem in the right way and probably saved my life. Dr. Gebhardt is an amazing doctor and really made me feel comfortable and confident things were going to go well, even though I was pretty scared that they weren’t."
