Letter from Karl “Chip” Case

Featured StoryMy name is Karl Case. I am an economist and a teacher. I taught economics at Wellesley College for nearly 45 years. I wrote a text book on basic economics that has been in print for ten editions over 23 years. But I am probably best known for being the father of an index. Bob Shiller and I developed an index of house prices called the S&P Case-Shiller Index.

I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 1992, almost 19 years ago. I am now about to turn 65. At the time I was diagnosed, the prognosis was not good. At least it didn’t sound good to me. Today, I am playing golf every few days, walking all the way, playing tennis (badly, but that has always been true), and working a 60-hour week giving talks, writing op-eds, and actually doing research.
