During my interview process with the BIDMC Development Office, I learned of Tom's Ride and pledged that if I got the job, I would start a team (I have a few people in mind to join), borrow a bike, train for and complete the 50-mile ride. My only question is do I have to wear bike shorts?

Unfortunately for me, but more so for everyone else, the answer from my cycling enthusiast friends and family, was yes. While that gave me significant pause, I am signing up and recruiting riders after hearing Reason to Ride founder Tom DesFosses tell an auditorium full of BIDMC administrative leaders that he was diagnosed with brain cancer and given three and a half months to live -- five years ago! Tom wants to continue his three-year trend of tripling the money raised, so this year the race goal is in the neighborhood of $150,000 and every penny goes to support Dr. Eric Wong's Brain Tumor Fund at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.

Tonight, I'm off to Back Bay Bicycles to get fitted to my brother Mike's bike, pick up a pair of shoes, fingerless gloves and, ahem, bike shorts.
